Dance in the City project

Dance in the City supported by Dance City, Northern Cultural Partnerships and Newcastle City Council delivered a community dance development programme targeting the East End, West End and Outer West areas of Newcastle.

Helen and a team of 6 artists delivered dance sessions to young people in youth and community settings developing ongoing relations with youth organisations and City Council officials and education departments setting up groups of after – school dance sessions.

Over a 3 year period the company sustained long term dance activity to young people promoting social inclusion and change. The company developed a Youth Dance performance group integrating surrounding groups and areas. The youth dance group developed dance, personal and social skills and performed to VIPS for the City Council, theatres, platforms and festival events in the North East.

Graduate training programme

Helen developed a graduate training programme to help 6 artists to gain experience as performing artists with Virtual Motion and to learn the relevant skills required to become a freelance artist and to develop teaching and choreographic skills in education and community settings.

The project was funded and supported by Newcastle City Council, Dance City, Northern Cultural Skills Partnership and Arts Council England.

The project lasted over a 6 month period and its success led to artists working on future projects with Virtual Motion and the City Council and helped others to manage their own projects, set up a company and further performance opportunities with various dance companies and teaching posts.

The Company continues to raise funds with various partners to develop graduate programmes.
